Grand Theft Auto III follows a similar path that the previous titles in the series do. It is a single player, open world game where you are free to explore the city and the surrounding area. You can complete missions, attack other characters, and explore Liberty City as a whole. You have many of the same features that you expect of a Grand Theft Auto title.
There is more to Grand Theft Auto III than action and a good story. Yes, most people play the GTA series for both, but it gives collectors and casual players something to love, too. It has humor, a fantastic soundtrack, and memorable characters. It is what you expect from Rockstar North and the GTA series.
Grand Theft Auto III Story
Along with a large city to explore, you also have a detailed story. This, again, follows what you expect from the GTA series. The story in this game follows Claude, a bank robber that nearly died because of an assassination attempt by his then girlfriend during a robbery. After an unexpected release from a police van, Claude finds himself working for the Mafia, with Don Salvatore Leone and Capo Toni Cipriani. Through various twists and turns in the story, he switches allegiance to the Yakuza.
Claude, during the entire game, finds himself in the midst of gang wars and struggles between various powers. From assassinating Salvatore Leone to taking out the brother of the head of the Yakuza, he is in the middle of it all. It is your job to navigate the bloody mess before you while moving your way through the story.
Grand Theft Auto III Characters
As with any Rockstar North game, Grand Theft Auto III gives you a long list of characters that you will meet, befriend, and kill. These characters include:
- Claude: The silent bank robber and the main protagonist. You play as Claude throughout the game.
- Maria: The love interest of Claude and former wife of Don Salvatore
- Don Salvatore Leone: Head of the Mafia family.
- Tony Cipriani: Salvatore’s Capo.
- 8-Ball: Mafia member who escapes with Claude and introduces him to the family.
- Catalina: Former girlfriend of Claude who tries to kill him.
- Kasen Asuka: Head of the Akuza.
- Kasen Kenji: Brother of Asuka.
These are only a handful of the characters in the game. As you explore, you will meet many more. This includes major and minor characters alike. All of them play a large role in the story.
Grand Theft Auto III Weapons
You have a decent selection of melee, projectile, and firearm weapons. Those weapons include:
- Your Bare Fist
- Baseball Bat
- Pistol
- Molotov Cocktails
- Detonator
- Flamethrower
- Grenade
- Uzi
- M16
- AK-47
- Shotgun
- Sniper Rifle
- Rocket Launcher
If you have played a GTA game in the past, then you may know what to expect from the weaponry. For the most part, it is a similar list that you see in most titles in the series, apart from newer ones, like GTA V, where the selection and variety have grown.
Grand Theft Auto III Radio Stations
One thing that people love about Rockstar North, GTA in particular, is the additional content they throw into their games. The radio stations in Grand Theft Auto III are part of that. When you play Grand Theft Auto III, you can listen to a wide variety of music thanks to the stations available. They differ in music type and they all play numerous artists. Stations include:
- Head Radio: Pop Rock station
- Lips 106: Pop station
- Chatterbox FM: Talk station
- Game FM: Hip Hop / Rap station
- Double Clef FM: Classical / Opera station
- K-Jah: Reggae station
- Rise: Trance / Dance / Rave station
- MSX FM: Jungle / Drum n’ Bass station
- Flashback 95.6: 1980’s station
These radio stations include their own genre of music and their own long list of artists to play. They also have the regular talk, advertisements, and other entertaining points that you have come to expect on the radio in GTA.
For both Xbox and PC versions, you also have a custom radio station for playing your own music.
Grand Theft Auto III Gameplay
One of the things that made Grand Theft Auto III remarkable in many cases is the gameplay. It was a step forward, becoming one of the most popular titles in the series. For it, Rockstar North utilized technology and introduced features not yet seen in the series. It set the stage for future GTA games. The changes to the series that were dramatic were mostly with the interface. The appearance of the game and the way the game acts, in general, saw an upgrade.
You still have many of the core aspects of a GTA game included. Carjacking, hand-to-hand combat, escaping the authorities, getting your wanted level up, the ability to go by foot or vehicle, and collecting money. Another major change, though, is the fact that you cannot lose at the game anymore. GTA 3 was the first to introduce spawning in the series. When you die or are arrested, you simply go to the hospital or the police station, losing some money and hours in the game. If you’re having trouble getting through a particular mission in GTA, then you can look through the many Grand Theft Auto III walkthrough guides which are located online from many video gaming information websites.
Grand Theft Auto III Prequels
The GTA series has core games and side games. After GTA III, a few side games came out. These include both Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories. Both of these games are prequels that lead up to Grand Theft Auto III. Claude actually appears in San Andreas, where you hear his name for the first time, and Liberty City Stories is in the city three years before the events of Grand Theft Auto III.
The Next Step After Grand Theft Auto III is Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto IV came out 4 years after Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. GTA IV follows a new set of characters in Liberty City with a new story. In GTA 4, you play as Niko Bellic, dealing with crime, family, and personal struggles in Grand Theft Auto 4. There’s even side games which Grand Theft Auto players can play in Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City as well.
Grand Theft Auto III Cheats, Codes and Unlockables
Like any GTA game, you have several cheats available. These range from normal cheats to improve your abilities in game, such as getting all weapons and having full health, to things that are just fun and weird, like flying cars. Look into the cheats for your platform version of Grand Theft Auto III to use them.
