The story in this game follows Claude, a bank robber that nearly died because of an assassination attempt by his then girlfriend during a robbery. After an unexpected release from a police van, Claude finds himself working for the Mafia, with Don Salvatore Leone and Capo Toni Cipriani. Through various twists and turns in the story, he switches allegiance to the Yakuza.

Claude, during the entire game, finds himself in the midst of gang wars and struggles between various powers. From assassinating Salvatore Leone to taking out the brother of the head of the Yakuza, he is in the middle of it all. It is your job to navigate the bloody mess before you while moving your way through the story.

As with any Rockstar North game, Grand Theft Auto III gives you a long list of characters that you will meet, befriend, and kill. These characters include:
